Moving to Great Britain with a dog, cat, or ferret

The UK pet move checklist, complete and free

Here is the good news up front: done right, there is no quarantine. A compliant pet from the US walks into Great Britain with you. The path is genuinely manageable on your own, which is why this page is free and holds nothing back: every step, every clock, and every primary source is below. Quarantine of up to 4 months exists only as the penalty for getting the sequence wrong.

We send the checklist and nothing else, unless you later start a paid plan.

The checklist, in order

One clock dominates: arrival must come at least 21 full days after the rabies vaccination, with vaccination day counting as day zero. Everything else is sequencing. The microchip goes in before the vaccine, the health certificate is issued inside the final 10 days, and dogs get a tapeworm treatment timed to a window of 24 to 120 hours before landing. A pet starting from nothing is typically ready in about a month; a pet with a current chip-then-vaccine history can be ready as fast as the paperwork allows.

Scope: dogs, cats, and ferrets entering England, Wales, or Scotland from the US as a non-commercial move. Northern Ireland follows separate DAERA guidance, noted at the end.

The checklist

  1. Check the breed rules first

Banned breeds cannot enter Great Britain without an existing Certificate of Exemption, and there is no way to conjure one for a move. Confirm your dog is clear before spending a penny on anything else.

    When: before anything else.

  2. Book an approved route, and expect cargo

Pets must travel on an approved route with an approved transport company. From the US that means arrival as manifest cargo in nearly every case; in-cabin arrival into Great Britain is generally unavailable, with assistance dogs the main exception. Talk to the airline or a pet shipper early, because cargo space books out weeks ahead and summer heat rules can limit options.

When: start inquiries as soon as the move is real; book once the 21-day math below sets your earliest arrival.

  3. Microchip, before the rabies vaccine

The chip has to be implanted before the rabies vaccination for the vaccine to count. Same vet visit works if the chip goes in first and both get recorded. Already vaccinated but chipped after? The vaccine has to be redone after the chip, and the 21-day clock restarts.

    Sequence gate: chip first, always.

  4. Rabies vaccination, then 21 full days of waiting

The pet must be at least 12 weeks old at vaccination. After the shot (or the last shot of the primary course), count 21 full days before arrival, with vaccination day as day zero. No rabies blood test is required coming from the US. Boosters kept current carry no new wait.

Clock: vaccination day is day zero; earliest arrival is day 22 of the count. This is the long pole of the whole move.

  5. Great Britain pet health certificate, inside the final 10 days

A USDA-accredited vet completes the GB pet health certificate and USDA endorses it; the endorsement fee is $101 for a certificate with no lab tests, fixed by the USDA fee table. The pet must enter Great Britain within 10 days of the certificate being issued, so this appointment sits close to the flight by rule, never early.

Clock: issue date starts a 10-day window to arrival.

  6. Tapeworm treatment for dogs, 24 to 120 hours out

Dogs only: a vet administers praziquantel (or equivalent) no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before scheduled arrival in Great Britain, and records it in the certificate. Time it against the flight's scheduled landing, and re-time it if the flight moves by more than the window allows.

Clock: a backward window from scheduled arrival, 24 to 120 hours. Cats and ferrets skip this.

  7. Sign the non-commercial declaration

If ownership is staying put, complete the non-commercial declaration that accompanies the certificate. Extra Balai rules apply instead if the pet travels more than 5 days apart from the owner, ownership is transferring, or more than 5 pets travel outside a competition context.

When: with the certificate paperwork, before travel.

  8. Arrival, usually through Heathrow's animal reception centre

Animals arriving at Heathrow clear through the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, run by the City of London Corporation. Budget for its charges: the published 2021-22 schedule showed roughly £186 minimum for the first animal plus roughly £22 handling, and current figures should be confirmed with HARC directly when you book.

When: on landing; the transport company usually coordinates the handover.

What happens if something is wrong

A non-compliant pet can be put into quarantine for up to 4 months, or refused entry if it traveled by sea, with the owner responsible for all fees and charges. Every rule above is cheap to satisfy and expensive to miss, which is the whole argument for doing this with a calendar in hand.

Northern Ireland is its own path

Northern Ireland applies EU-side rules for pets arriving from outside the UK, under DAERA guidance, and dogs entering NI need the tapeworm treatment. A pet landing in Great Britain first and then crossing to NI uses the separate NI pet travel scheme documents. Landing in Dublin and driving north is the EU and Ireland path instead; our EU checklist covers that entry.

Common questions

Is there quarantine when I bring my pet to the UK?

Done right, no. A compliant dog, cat, or ferret from the US enters Great Britain with no quarantine at all. Quarantine of up to 4 months is the penalty for non-compliance, with the owner responsible for all fees, so the checklist exists to keep you out of it.

How long does the preparation take?

The dominant clock is 21 full days after the rabies vaccination (or the last shot of the primary course) before arrival, with vaccination day counting as day zero. A pet starting from nothing is typically ready in about a month, and the health certificate and tapeworm treatment sit inside the final days by rule.

Does my pet need a rabies blood test?

No. Coming from the US there is no rabies titer requirement for Great Britain. Microchip first, rabies vaccination second, 21 full days of waiting, and the paperwork carry the day.

Can my dog fly in the cabin?

Generally no. Pets from the US arrive in Great Britain as manifest cargo on an approved route with an approved transport company; in-cabin arrival is generally unavailable, with assistance dogs the main exception. Confirm routing with your airline early.

What does the move cost?

The government-fixed piece is the $101 USDA endorsement of the health certificate. The rest varies: vet visits, the cargo booking, and the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre's charges, which ran roughly £186 plus a roughly £22 handling fee on the published 2021-22 schedule. Treat those as ballparks and confirm current figures when you book.

Moving the other direction?

If your dog will ever come back to the United States, that trip has its own federal rules, and one document has to exist before you leave. The US re-entry plan is $19 and dates every step to your flights. The UK is off CDC's high-risk list, so the return is usually the light regime; the plan proves it and catches the exceptions.
