Moving to New Zealand with a dog or cat

Ten clean days in quarantine, or an open-ended stay. The paperwork decides.

Nobody skips quarantine in New Zealand, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling you something broken. Every dog and cat from the US or UK serves a stay at an MPI-approved facility near Auckland or Christchurch. What you control is everything else: whether the stay is the clean 10-day minimum or an extension billed by the government hour, whether the 6-month identity clock survives to the flight, and whether the NZD $8,000-scale spend lands the first time. That is won or lost in the sequencing, months before you fly.

One sequencing mistake

A restart, or a stay with no end date

A titer draw with no official scan behind it cannot be used. A tick on arrival, a document gap, or a release day that lands on a weekend extends the stay at MPI's hourly rate plus board.

Every date right

The clean 10-day minimum

The shortest stay New Zealand law allows, a release inspection booked for the first business day, and no surprise line on the facility invoice.

How it works

1

Answer a few questions

Your target date plus what's already done: microchip, vaccination, official identity scan, RNATT test, facility booking. Two minutes, no account.

2

See every gap, free

We check MPI's 2026 Import Health Standard for your origin country and show exactly what passes, what fails, and what's still unverified.

Every step dated backward from your arrival, through the booking, the identity clock, and the permit queue, explained in plain language. $129, refunded if it doesn't help.

The two mistakes that cost people months

First: the order of the scan and the draw. Under the 2026 standard an official veterinarian has to scan the chip on or before the titer blood draw, and your earliest flight is 6 months after that first scan. Most people learn this after a draw at an ordinary vet visit, when the only path left is a fresh scan, a fresh draw, and a fresh wait. Second: the booking. Three approved facilities serve the whole country, and the signed booking form goes inside the permit application, so a late booking stalls the permit, and the permit is the last gate before the flight is real. The checker below runs your real dates against MPI's own rules, so you find out now instead of at the freight counter.

None of these clocks start until you act. Every week of waiting moves your pet's earliest legal arrival back a week.

Check your dog or cat against New Zealand's rules, free

Your move

Every pet stays at least 10 days in an approved quarantine facility: New Zealand law has no shorter outcome. Moving from Hawaii itself? Hawaii counts as rabies-free with its own easier checklist, so pick "Another country" and check MPI's guide.

Your pet

New Zealand bars five dog breed types and wolf hybrids, and hybrid cat lines need separate approval. Bengal cats are fine under the 2026 standard. Ordinary mixed breeds are fine; we check your answer against the list.

A desexing certificate satisfies the Brucella canis rule outright under the 2026 standard. Entire dogs test instead.

Microchip

The chip has to go in before every vaccination and test it certifies. MPI only counts events performed after the chip.

Rabies vaccination

The 2026 standard honours multi-year products, and a first-ever dose has to sit at least 6 months before the flight. Coverage must stay unbroken through the shipment day.

The official identity scan and the RNATT blood test

Under the 2026 standard an official veterinarian scans the chip on or before the draw, and that scan sets your earliest flight: at least 6 months later. Haven't started? Good: the plan sequences it right the first time.

Quarantine booking

Three approved facilities serve the whole country, and the signed booking form goes inside the permit application, so the booking comes first. The plan reserves early and chases the confirmation.

The ways this ends

Every arriving pet gets exactly one of these outcomes, and the preparation decides which.

OutcomeWhat happensStay charges
Clean 10-day minimum Aircraft to the named facility, MPI vet inspection inside 72 hours, released at a business-hours inspection on or after day 10. The best outcome the law allows. Facility board, typically NZD $800 to $2,500
Extended stay A tick, an illness, a document gap, or a release date outside business hours keeps your pet in until it clears. MPI veterinary time bills at NZD $216.84 per hour excl GST on top of board. Open-ended
Cannot board, or worse No permit, no booking, a missed test window, or a broken identity chain stops the journey before departure. A non-compliant arrival faces reshipment under the Biosecurity Act. Nothing, and no trip

Common questions

Can my pet skip quarantine in New Zealand?

No. Every dog and cat arriving from the United States, the United Kingdom, and every other Category 3 country serves a minimum 10-day stay at one of three MPI-approved facilities, two near Auckland and one near Christchurch. Anyone promising zero quarantine for New Zealand is wrong. What the paperwork decides is whether the stay is a clean 10 days with a release on the first business day, or an extended stay billed at MPI's hourly veterinary rate plus board. This plan exists to land you the clean minimum.

How long does it take to move a pet to New Zealand?

Plan on 8 to 10 months from a standing start. Under the 2026 standard an official veterinarian scans the chip on or before the titer blood draw, and shipment has to be at least 6 months after that first scan. The titer needs a 3-month wait of its own, the facility booking has to be in hand before the permit application, and the permit adds weeks of government processing you cannot speed up. Families who start 10 months out ride the clocks comfortably; families who start at 6 months have zero slack.

How much does it cost?

Government charges are fixed by regulation: NZD $233.25 excl GST for the import permit, NZD $325.26 excl GST border inspection for the first pet, and MPI veterinary time in quarantine at NZD $216.84 per hour excl GST. Facility board for the 10-day stay is set by the facility, typically NZD $800 to $2,500 per pet. With laboratory work, vet visits, endorsements, and pet freight, a US or UK dog typically lands between NZD $6,000 and $12,000 all in, and cats typically run meaningfully less.

What is the official identity check?

New in the 2026 standard: an official veterinarian scans the microchip on or before the rabies titer blood draw, and the competent authority (USDA in the US, APHA in the UK) transmits that identity check to MPI. Shipment must be at least 6 months after the first scan on every path, so the scan sets your earliest flight. A draw with no official scan behind it cannot be used, and the only fix is a fresh scan, a fresh draw, and a fresh wait. It is the single most valuable sequencing fact in the whole process, and the plan puts it first.

Can my dog fly in the cabin?

No. Pets enter New Zealand as manifested cargo in an IATA-approved crate, landing at Auckland or Christchurch. The facility's approved transport collects your pet from the aircraft and drives it to the facility named on the permit; you reunite on release day. Any transit stop has to be in a country MPI recognizes for the animal's category, which matters most on UK routings.

Which breeds are banned?

Dogs: Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario, and American Pit Bull Terrier under the Dog Control Act, plus wolf hybrids, which would need separate approval. Cats: hybrid lines such as Savannah, Safari, and Chausie need separate approval, while Bengals are eligible under the 2026 standard. Ordinary mixed breeds are fine, though a dog resembling a banned type can draw questions, so ask MPI early if the paperwork says "cross".

When does the titer window start?

The day of the blood draw. The RNATT window runs from 3 months to 12 months before shipment, measured from the draw, with a passing result of at least 0.5 IU/ml. In practice the 6-month identity clock from the first official scan binds tighter than the 3-month titer wait, and the permit queue eats the front of the travel window. The plan holds all three clocks at once so you don't have to.

My pet already has a titer but no official scan. Now what?

Under the 2026 standard that draw can't carry the import, because the identity check has to happen on or before it. The honest path is an official scan, a fresh draw at the same visit, and a wait measured from the new scan. The plan lays that out plainly and dates it, and it will never promise a stay on a test that can't deliver it.
